OVERVIEW AND TOPICS


Agents will learn the unique challenges and exposures of Offshore Mega-Terminals including the solutions deepwater terminals will provide supertankers. The 12 major ports in North America and the methodology for ranking the ports is discussed. The Course further touches on the ageing tanker fleet and the tanker newbuild exposures, the technological advancement of the ports, including the environmental sustainability initiatives. Concluding the course are the future prospects for the ports in North America, emerging trends and predictions.
This advanced session equips participants with a structure method to evaluate hybrid commercial marine risks by mapping real-world operational exposures against coverage intent and representative policy wording. Emphasis is placed on identifying common pressure points where hybrid operations stress definitions, exclusions, conditions, follow-form provisions, and operations description leading to coverage gaps or claims disputes. The course further provides best practices for risk classification and coverage alignment.
Agents will do a deep dive into the unique structure of mutual companies, including the underwriting objectives and methodologies, and the advantages and disadvantages of the club structure. Further discussion follows on the component of polling or mutualization, Profit & Loss Protection, and the Role of Reinsurance.
In this section, agents will learn Clase Law Updates including the Reversal of Summary Decision on the Issues of Situs and Status, Timeliness of Claim Filing, Claim Based on Four Weeks of Maritime Exposure Involving Questionable Exposure, The “Duration” Requirement and the 30% Guideline, ending with The Future of Seaman Status.
In this session, agents will focus on the interlocking jurisdictions of the Longshore Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act (LHWCA), Jones Act v. LHWCA Approach, Defense Base Act (DBA), and the Risk Management Techniques for what to do the event of a claim. Further discussions include Wage Statute, Seaman’s Remedies, Survival Actions, and Shipowner Duty of Care. Concluding the session Duties Owed to Invitees, Licensees, and Trespassers are further explored.
Agents will learn the background of The Dali, the cargo ship that collided with Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge including a detailed analysis of the power failure on the Dali vessel. Coverage and Exposure topics include Employees, Pilot, Physical Damage, Loss of Hire, Vessel Owners Liability, Charters Liability, Trade Disruption, Port Blockage, Business Interruption and Cargo. Risk Management and Mitigation and Regulatory changes are examined.
After an overview of the rationale for excluding war risks from standard Hull Policies, agents will learn the importance of understanding trading limits, cancellation provisions, and how geopolitical events can immediately impact coverage availability and pricing. Discussion follows on the differences between Terrorism Insurance vs TRIA and why organizations may choose to purchase terrorism insurance even with TRIA in place. Concluding the session is how Active Shooter Coverage fills the gaps left by terrorism insurance and the growing importance of preparedness, training, and coordinated response planning alongside insurance protection.
