John Bratton | Bio

John C Bratton, Ph.D., CIC, CPCU, ASLI, ARM

John Bratton retired from the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) in May 2018 after serving as Professor of Insurance and Risk Management for 17 years. Prior to this position he served as State Farm Professor of Insurance, and Director of Insurance Studies, at the University of Louisiana at Monroe; and as Assistant Professor of Insurance at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

John began his insurance career as an independent agent in Georgetown, Kentucky. While in the agency business he held several offices in the Professional Insurance Agents of Kentucky, including President, and Executive Director; and was once honored as Kentucky's Professional Insurance Agent of the Year. He earned the CIC designation in 1978 at Kentucky's first conferment. He also holds the CPCU, the ASLI, and the ARM designations.

In 1987 John sold his agency and left Kentucky to earn his Bachelor of Science and his Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Risk Management & Insurance from Florida State University (FSU). He has served as a CIC Education Consultant since 1993 and is currently the consultant in Louisiana. In 2003-2004 John served as President of Southern Risk & Insurance Association (SRIA), an academic organization dedicated to furthering education and research in insurance and risk management. From 2004-2012 he served as Director of UCA's Insurance Education Institute, a graduate course in the fundamental principles of insurance and risk management for high school teachers, designed to prepare them to teach insurance and risk management. This led to the creation of an Insurance and Risk Management course by the Arkansas Department of Career Education that is currently taught in grades 9-12 of many Arkansas high schools.

In the spring of 2011 The National Alliance announced the creation of the University Associate Certified Insurance Counselor (UACIC) designation program, designed to encourage college students to become active members of the insurance and risk management community prior to graduation. This program was incorporated into UCA's Insurance & Risk Management degree program. John was inducted into the Arkansas Insurance Hall of Fame in 2018.
