Patrick A. Deem | Bio

Patrick Deem began his insurance industry career in December 1969 with USF&G Insurance Company in the Louisville, Kentucky Branch Office. He has been an Underwriting Manager, Sales Manager, Excess and Surplus Lines Underwriter, and an Independent Insurance Agent. Patrick publishes articles and conducts seminars on a state and national basis regarding technical subjects of property and casualty insurance for insurance and trade associations. In addition, Patrick has served as an insurance consultant and testified as an expert witness in various fields associated with the insurance industry. Currently, Patrick is a licensed Risk Manager in Texas. He founded Risk Management and Insurance Education Services in Austin, Texas, an independent company which serves insurance companies, agents, and insureds. Patrick holds the Certified Insurance Counselor designation, which he obtained in 1984. He has been a National Faculty member for The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research since 1986.

Robert E. Shomo | Bio

Bobby Shomo is President of Shomo-Madsen Insurance which is headquartered in central Iowa. Shomo-Madsen Insurance is a Best Practices Agency recipient for six years running and represents approximately 16 Insurance Companies with an agency mix of roughly 45% Personal Lines, 25% Commercial Lines, 20% Municipalities and 10% Life and Health. The agency has five locations and 25 employees with their main office in Marshalltown, Iowa. They continue to pursue growth through both acquisition and organic growth and are scheduled to close their next agency purchase on October 30th, 2020. Bobby is involved in the agency on a full-time basis as a managing partner, a producer specializing in schools and municipalities and the Human Resources manager. Prior to purchasing his first agency, Bobby spent six years on the company side primarily in casualty claims with rotations in underwriting and loss control. His MBA was earned with concentrations in Finance and Accounting and he received his CIC designation in 2012. Bobby has a passion for education as both a teacher and a student. His background brings a perspective from both the company and agency sides. In addition, his agency experience has developed from a relatively small, single owner shop with three employees and a handful of contracts to his current structure with a 50/50 partner, multiple locations and staff of twenty-five. Additionally, Shomo-Madsen Insurance has had to deal with three catastrophic weather-related events in 25 months. An EF-3 tornado in July of 2018 that hit main street; a major hail storm in May of 2019 and a Derecho (106 mph straight-line winds) in August of 2020. Bobby is currently working toward his CRM designation.

Sara Bradshaw Ray | Bio

Sara also has over 30 years in agency ownership and management. She is a licensed Property & Casualty, Life & Health independent agent and also maintains her Certified Insurance Counselor designation of distinction. Her agency management experience is complimented by a background in company commercial underwriting which enables her to uniquely step into the shoes of her agency principal clients with empathetic eyes to help evaluate and manage their agency ownership challenges. Not only does Ms. Ray bring a wealth of industry expertise, resources and knowledge to the table, her vast experience coupled with a keen sense of the dynamics of efficiency, and its impact on productivity uniquely suits her to meet a variety of operational, management, and marketing needs in organizations today. She is the founder of SynerDynamics Group, a consulting firm that has become known as "THE agency asset maximization resource" in the insurance industry today. A renowned speaker on the subject of agency efficiency, Ray advocates that by capitalizing on the power of synergy the result is maximized productivity which adds strength to the organizational dollar and ultimately a blacker bottom line. With a lifelong passion for leadership development, Ms. Ray is also an executive coach and also founded MyNetwork, a nationwide facilitated mastermind network for female leaders.
